What opportunities do Azerbaijani medical students and residents have for training in Germany?
Actually, this is a very sensitive question. Why sensitive? Yes, people do contact me.
Both in Azerbaijan and in Germany — and in Germany, you could say, I get two or three emails a week saying, “Doctor, we would like to do an internship at your clinic,” always for one month or three months at most. And I always respond positively to our students and residents. In such cases these students or residents contact us, and I always give them a positive answer.
I am ready to support them. It’s just that this issue very often depends on finances. Why?
Because our clinic has no dormitory, they would like the accommodation to be free, and apart from accommodation the clinic itself does not provide financial support. Because, in truth, it should be the student’s or resident’s own interest. In this situation they can always expect support from my side — as a deputy director — and they do receive that support.
What happens after that depends on their own financial situation. As for residents — yes, I help with residency as well. If we have a vacancy, or if there is a vacancy in other departments, I can help with that.
However, the procedures there — the procedures in Germany, passing the language exam and then getting the diploma recognized — can take a long time. And during that long period those doctors have to stay there at their own expense. So again it comes back to this: if there is a problem with their own finances, limitations may arise.
