Do people see a urologist only for urological complaints?
This is a very interesting question, because I encounter this issue — these kinds of requests — not only in clinics, both in Azerbaijan and in Germany, but even in my own family and my own circle. Why? Because many friends, acquaintances and relatives, even within my own family, come to me as a doctor, as a relative, as an acquaintance, with questions from other areas, that is, not related to urology, and very often I am able to point these patients in the right direction and even prescribe their treatment.
But if we take clinics, even when it isn’t my specialty, even when it isn’t my field, many patients come to me with hypertension, for example, that is, high blood pressure, because it may be related to the adrenal gland, or to kidney diseases, or to diseases of the renal vessels. If we take other fields, gynecological conditions also very often come up in urology. We call these urogynecological diseases, or syndromes.
Urinary incontinence, or bladder prolapse, and other syndromes and symptoms. In such cases patients may turn not only to a gynecologist but also to us urologists. If we take other fields, many patients come to us with lower back pain.
Because here it isn’t possible to tell them apart: is this back pain or kidney pain? Or they come to us with abdominal or lower abdominal pain.
In such cases there may also be bowel problems. To differentiate these conditions, patients should of course see a specialist, and a proper examination can lead to the correct diagnosis of the condition.
